A headboard is the biggest piece of upholstery in most bedrooms, and it’s the first thing you see when you walk in. We make them from scratch to fit your bed.
Styles we’ve made
These all came off our bench in Jabavu:
- Fluted. Vertical channels, like the mustard velvet headboard and bed base at the top of this page, and a pink fluted version.
- Deep-buttoned. A tall buttoned headboard in brown with royal blue piping and wings, finished with matching bedside pedestals.
- Buttoned leather. One of our workshop photos shows a tan buttoned leather headboard being made.
- Upholstered bed bases. Covered in the same fabric as the headboard, so the whole bed reads as one piece.
How a custom headboard is made
- You send an idea. A photo from Instagram or Pinterest is perfect. Jocelyn Brown gave Kwanele a design to follow on another job and wrote that he matched “95% of what I wanted”.
- You give us the size. Single, three-quarter, double, queen or king, or the measured width of your base. Tell us how tall you’d like it above the mattress.
- We bring samples. Velvet suits headboards because it holds colour and looks rich in soft bedroom light. Leather-look is easier to wipe.
- We build and upholster it. Frame, padding, fabric, then fluting, buttons or piping.
- We deliver it. WhatsApp 074 019 9297 to start.
Bunk beds and made-to-measure pieces
We’ve also built a wooden bunk bed with built-in shelves and storage underneath. The ladder goes on whichever side suits your room. If there’s a piece you can’t find in a shop, send us a picture. See chairs, headboards and furniture repair for the rest of what we make and repair.
Headboards for Florida and Roodepoort
Florida and Roodepoort are our main area. Measure your bed, WhatsApp the size and a picture of the look you want to 074 019 9297, and Kwanele sends you the material options and a quote. We deliver the finished headboard to your door. See our Florida page.
Pairing with the rest of the room
A headboard in the same fabric as an ottoman or bedroom chair ties a room together. If you’re having an armchair or a couch done too, choose the fabrics at the same sample visit. See dining chair reupholstery and choosing fabric.

Questions we get asked
Can you make a headboard to fit my bed?
Yes. Tell us the bed size, or measure the width of the base, and send a photo or a picture of the style you like.
Do you make matching bedside pedestals?
One of our buttoned headboards went out with matching pedestals. Ask when you send your idea.
