What does it cost to reupholster a couch in Johannesburg?

In short

What couch reupholstery costs in Johannesburg depends on fabric, foam and frame repairs. Here's what goes into a quote and how to get one from a photo.

If you’ve searched for a price and found nothing but “contact us for a quote”, we get why that’s annoying. So this page lays out what goes into the number, and what to send us to get yours.

The five things that set the price

1. How big it is

A 2-seater, a 3-seater, an L-shaped corner unit and a full 3-2-1 lounge suite are very different amounts of fabric and labour. Count the seats and the separate cushions.

2. The fabric or leather you choose

This usually moves the price most. A hard-wearing weave, a velvet and a genuine leather can be far apart per metre, and a big corner couch uses a lot of metres. Ask what each sample costs when we bring them, so you can see the difference before you commit.

3. Whether the foam is finished

If you sink to the frame, the seat foam needs replacing. Lauren Lang had her leather cushions restuffed as part of her job. New foam adds to the price, and it’s also what makes the couch feel new rather than just look it.

4. What’s under the fabric

Broken rails, loose joints and snapped springs only show once the old cover’s off. We’ll show you what we find.

5. The finish

Deep buttoning, studs along the arms, piping on the seams and scatter cushions all take time. They’re worth it on a chesterfield. You might not want them on a family couch.

Where our prices start

These are our minimums. The final price depends on the material you choose.

  • A standard 3-seater couch: from R3,800.
  • A standard set of 6 dining chairs: from R4,900.

For anything else, like an L-shaped corner unit, a full 3-2-1, an armchair or a headboard, WhatsApp a photo and Kwanele will price it for you. Collection is charged by distance, starting at R250.

What customers said about the price

Don’t take our word for it. These are from people who’d already paid.

my couches look and feel brand new, and it did not cost an arm and a leg.

Kailer Smit, Google review, 3 months ago

This thing was on its last legs and for a very reasonable price I received my couch back looking even better than when I bought it brand new.

Michelle Coopen, Google review

You’ve saved me a lot of money from buying new chairs.

Mapuleng Gaula, Google review

If you’re weighing up a new couch instead, read reupholster or buy new.

How to get your price

WhatsApp 074 019 9297 with:

  • one photo of the whole couch, straight on
  • one close-up of the worst damage
  • the number of seats, and your area

That’s enough for Kwanele to quote you. On collection day we bring the samples, and the fabric or leather you pick sets the final number.

Questions we get asked

Is the quote free?

Yes. WhatsApp a photo to 074 019 9297 and we'll quote you at no charge.

Can you give me a price without seeing the couch?

Yes. Kwanele quotes from your WhatsApp photos and what you tell us, so you don't wait for a visit. The final price depends on the fabric or leather you choose from the samples we bring on collection day.
