Most couches don’t die. They sag. The fabric can look fine for years after the foam underneath has given up, which is why so many people put up with a couch that’s uncomfortable long before they think of fixing it. Thato Nkwe wrote that their couches were “faded, sagging, and embarrassing to have in the lounge” and that they were “ready to throw them away”. They didn’t. Reupholstery did the job.
Here are the signs, from the most obvious to the easiest to miss.
1. You sink until you feel the frame
Sit in your usual spot. If you feel a hard rail under your thighs or your sitting bones, the seat foam has compressed to almost nothing. This is the clearest sign there is.
2. The cushions stay flat after you stand up
Good foam springs back within seconds. If there’s a bum-shaped hollow that’s still there a minute later, the foam has lost its recovery.
3. Your usual seat is lower than the others
Compare the seat nobody uses with the one everybody fights over. On a 3-seater, the middle and the ends often wear at different rates. A difference you can see from across the room is a foam problem.
4. The covers look baggy
A cushion cover that used to be tight now wrinkles and folds. The cover hasn’t stretched much. The foam inside has shrunk.
5. The front edge has rolled forwards
When the seat foam softens, the front edge of the cushion slumps over the front rail. You’ll feel it at the backs of your knees.
6. You can feel lumps or crumbs through the fabric
Old foam breaks down into crumbs. If you unzip a cushion and find yellow dust, it’s done.
7. Getting up takes two goes
If standing up from the couch takes a push off the arm, the seat is too low and too soft. That’s worth fixing for anyone older in the house.
Before you call: foam, springs or frame?
Take the seat cushions off and look at the base.
- The base is firm and flat. It’s the foam. That’s the simplest job. See foam replacement and cushion restuffing.
- The base dips in one place. It could be the webbing or springs under the seat. That needs the cover off, so it’s part of a reupholstery job.
- The base creaks or one arm rocks. Push each arm sideways. If one moves like a hinge, a frame rail may have cracked. That’s fixable too, but tell us when you send the photo, because it changes the quote.
Foam on its own, or with a new cover?
If the cover is in good shape, new foam alone might be all you need. Lauren Lang had the cushions of an L-shaped leather couch restuffed as part of a repair. If the cover is torn, faded or peeling as well, it makes sense to do both at once, so the new cover is cut to fit the new foam. Read reupholster or buy a new couch if you’re weighing it up.
What to send us
WhatsApp 074 019 9297 with a photo of the couch, a photo of the base with the cushions off, and a line on which of the 7 signs you’ve got. For what moves the price, read what it costs to reupholster a couch.
Questions we get asked
Can I just flip the cushions?
Flipping and rotating loose cushions spreads the wear and buys time. Once the foam has lost its shape, flipping only moves the dip to the other side.
Is a sagging couch worth fixing?
If the frame is solid, usually. Thato Nkwe's couches were "faded, sagging" and nearly thrown away. After reupholstery, they looked "straight out of a showroom".
