A chesterfield shows every mistake. Wavy studs, a pleat that pulls the wrong way, a rolled arm with a fold in it: you see them from the doorway. If you’re in Bedfordview and yours has torn, gone loose at the buttons or lost its shape, rebuild it properly or leave it alone.

## What to check on any chesterfield

-   **The stud lines.** Along the arms and the front, the studs should run straight and evenly spaced.

## A plain couch can become one

The before-and-after above started life as a brown pillow-back couch. It went back to its lounge as a grey velvet chesterfield, buttoned across the back and studded along the arm. When the frame is solid, the shape can change.

## Choosing the cover

Velvet goes darker in the folds of the buttoning, so a colour looks richer on a chesterfield than on a flat swatch. Leather catches the light on the rolls. That’s why we bring the samples to your home in Bedfordview: you judge them in your own room, at the angle you’ll see the couch from.
